Las Vegas facility managers often tell us the same thing: the panels were cleaned, and the generation numbers barely moved. It is such a common experience here that many have concluded cleaning simply does not do much in this climate.
The conclusion is wrong, but the observation is real. What went wrong was almost always the water.
What Makes the Las Vegas Valley Different
Exceptionally hard water
Southern Nevada draws most of its drinking water from the Colorado River via Lake Mead, and that water carries a heavy load of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Anyone who has lived here has seen what it does to shower glass and faucets.
It does the same thing to solar modules, with a worse outcome. Water hits hot glass, evaporates within moments, and leaves every mineral it was carrying bonded to the surface. That scale is not loose dust — it will not blow away, and the next wash with the same water adds another layer. This is why a hose-and-brush clean in Las Vegas frequently produces no measurable gain at all, and occasionally leaves an array transmitting less light than before. Deionized water is not an upgrade in this market. It is the difference between cleaning and redecorating the problem.
Among the driest metros in the United States
Las Vegas receives less annual rainfall than Phoenix, and the monsoon influence is weaker here. Whole seasons pass with nothing falling on a rooftop array. There is no natural reset — soiling simply accumulates from one cleaning to the next, which means the cleaning schedule is the only thing standing between your array and a steady downward drift.
Caliche and construction dust
The Valley’s desert soil contains caliche, a calcium-carbonate hardpan. Dust from disturbed ground carries that mineral content with it, and it behaves differently from ordinary dust: once wetted and dried on glass, it cements rather than rinsing off. The Valley is also still building outward fast, so a facility near active grading or an unpaved lot picks up far more of this than an established downtown rooftop.
The logistics corridor
North Las Vegas and the industrial areas along the I-15 corridor hold a dense concentration of distribution centres with large rooftop arrays. These are excellent sites for solar — big flat roofs, high daytime consumption — and difficult sites for soiling, with constant truck movement stirring dust and a lot of surrounding ground still bare. They also tend to have the best economics for cleaning, because the arrays are large enough that per-panel rates come down substantially.
Properties that never close
Hospitality, gaming and 24-hour distribution operations do not have a quiet period to schedule around. There is no weekend shutdown and no holiday gap. We plan these jobs around access rather than around closing time — coordinating with security, engineering and whoever controls roof keys, often working overnight or in early morning windows. Summer heat sets the working hours
Midday rooftop work in a Las Vegas summer is unsafe for crews, and applying water to glass at peak surface temperature risks thermal stress on the modules. From late spring through early autumn we work early mornings. Winter and spring allow normal daytime scheduling.
Water Use in a Drought Region
This question comes up in Las Vegas more than anywhere else we work, and it deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance.
Pole-fed deionized cleaning uses considerably less water than hosing an array down, because the water does its work on contact rather than through volume. There are no detergents or additives, so runoff is plain water going to your normal roof drainage — nothing that would concern an environmental compliance review.

Las Vegas Questions
We had the panels cleaned and output didn’t improve. Why?
Almost certainly the water. Valley tap water leaves heavy mineral scale when it dries on hot glass, and that scale blocks light as effectively as the dust that came off. Unlike dust it does not blow away, so it builds with each wash. This is the single most common reason cleaning appears not to work in Las Vegas — and the reason we use deionized water only.
Can existing scale be removed, or is the glass ruined?
In most cases it can be removed, though a first clean on a heavily scaled array takes longer and costs more than a routine one. Tell us during the assessment how the panels have been cleaned in the past — it changes the scope and we would rather price it correctly than surprise you on the invoice.
How often should Las Vegas commercial arrays be cleaned?
Two to four times a year suits most Valley sites, with facilities near construction, unpaved ground or heavy truck traffic at the higher end. Because there is so little rain here, the interval depends almost entirely on what is in the air around your specific building. The reliable way to find yours is to clean once and watch how long the output gain holds.
